What is Battleship?

Battleship is one of the quintessential classic games for two players and it is still as popular as ever. As a game that features elements of hidden movement, deduction and incremental strikes, Battleship requires you to think ahead and outpace your opponents on an exciting naval clash.

How to play battleships

Battleship rules are easy to follow, but the gameplay will make you think. Each player gets a grid - based board where they secretly arrange a fleet of ships of different sizes - the standard set usually includes a Carrier, Cruiser, Destroyer, Battleship and Submarine.

Here is how a normal play goes:

  • Place your vessels: Distribute your ships across your symbol. Hide their locations.
  • We put our ships on a square-grid, and made guesses on square- coordinates like B6 or E2 to attack our opponent’s board — with the same results.
  • Follow up when you hit: You can mark every shot knowing if it’s a hit or a miss, helping you to figure out where a ship might be.
  • Sink the fleet: The player who sinks all the opponent’s ships first is declared the winner. Winning at Battleship is more than just randomly guessing.

From here on it all came down to pattern recognition, probability, and trying to read your opponent. Each move is just as tactical as a brain teaser.
